Industry News

Telegram Applies for .gram
Pavel Durov announced on August 18 that Telegram applied to operate .gram in ICANN’s 2026 round, aiming to give users web addresses tied to their handles. The move follows July’s t.me suspension by Montenegro’s .me registry, which broke Telegram links worldwide. More than 1,600 applications were submitted, with strings expected to be disclosed in mid-October. Android Authority

Namecheap Sets Up a Registry, Applies for 40 Strings
Namecheap established Starlight Registry and filed 40 applications ranging from .aid to .wave, according to CEO Hillan Klein. Fifteen reportedly overlap with competing applications. Domain Name Wire

Signal: Both moves reduce outside dependencies: Namecheap on registry pricing, and Telegram on third-party registry enforcement. October’s Reveal Day will show how common that strategy is.

.lol 12,211 1,744 7,503 1,072 +672

.com gained about 2,200 daily registrations. Answering the question left open last week, .xyz did not hold its elevated level a third week: the wave receded, with the final two days at 14,434 and 4,362 against mid-week levels above 56,000. The developer extensions diverged mildly, .dev adding about 100 per day while .app eased, its weekend days coming in below the prior weekend in both data sources.

Hot Keywords: Industry Snapshot

Four-week window: Jul 27 – Aug 23, 2026. Pure-letter .com registrations only. Selection: of the twenty highest-volume keywords over the window, the two largest weekly gainers and the three largest decliners. Source: DomainKits Trends.

Keyword Jul 27 – Aug 2 Aug 3-9 Aug 10-16 Aug 17-23 W-o-W
store 2,591 2,555 2,579 2,894 +12.2%

life 2,158 2,286 2,934 2,342 -20.2%

“Services” and “llc” reversed the prior week’s gains and returned near their four-week starting points. “Life” also reversed a one-week spike.

Emerging .com Keywords

Selection: at least 100 registrations and 100% growth over the prior three-week average. Related terms are represented once; trademarks and single-day dumps are excluded. Source: DomainKits Trends.

Keyword Prior 3-Week Avg Report Week vs. Avg Peak Day Share
advisors 500 1,164 +133% 28%
consultant 137 431 +214% 74%
porta 130 305 +134% 55%
advance 108 274 +154% 25%
mainline 9 206 +2,107% 49%

“Advisors” represents a wealth-management naming template that raised several related keyword counts at once. The names combined invented places, wealth terms, and entity nouns, and appeared steadily through two registrar-default nameserver pools. Registration data cannot establish whether they relate to a similar early-August group. “Consultant” was a separate batch, with 76.6% of names at one registrar. DomainKits NRDS

The Week .lol Got a New Population

On August 19, a German developer launched outbid.lol, a public leaderboard ranked by bid amount. It reportedly drew more than one million visitors and $120,000 in bids within 48 hours, prompting dozens and then hundreds of imitators. Yahoo Finance

.lol registrations containing “bid” rose from 4, 3, and 0 in the prior three weeks to 806 this week: 1 on August 19, then 37, 297, 313, and 158 over the next four days. All but two were registered for one year. They included clone brands, city variants, vertical niches, and clone directories.

Across tracked extensions, “bid” names totaled 2,328; .lol accounted for 806, ahead of .com at 760. For “outbid,” .lol led 133 to 49. This is the first tracked live vocabulary for which a novelty extension out-registered .com.

Nameserver records indicate two new groups. Vercel-delegated names rose from 62 to 274, suggesting more developer projects. Names on registrar defaults also jumped: Namecheap from 399 to 1,136 and GoDaddy from 84 to 437, indicating more retail registrants. Cloudflare remained the largest provider at 5,862 names, close to its 4,923 the week before: that level is the extension’s standing baseline, carried by its established gambling and streaming networks rather than by the wave.

Signal: With every extension available, most imitators chose .lol over .com, and the original made the extension part of the product’s identity. The next test is whether future viral experiments make the same choice.

Registration data reflects observed patterns in newly registered domain names and does not constitute investment advice. Individual registrant intent cannot be confirmed from registration data alone.

humanfeel.com 2001 Host Korea Aug 20
wayphone.com 2002 Azprivatez Aug 19
blackwish.com 2002 Gname Aug 22

Signal: winebar.com is the week’s standout expiration and remains renewable. Among the catches, humanfeel.com and blackwish.com reached resale-marketplace nameservers within days. From last week’s list, biotime.com, snapdog.com and allmall.com all remain unchanged at their respective stages, still renewable. DomainKits Changes Monitor tracks additional status changes.

Weekly Insight

The outbid.lol wave barely affected global registration volume, but it changed who was registering .lol names. Within five days, the extension gained developers on deployment nameservers and retail buyers on registrar defaults. It also beat .com for the week’s defining vocabulary. The key question is whether those users stay, and whether the next viral experiment also chooses .lol. DomainKits Trends
