August 2026 Domain Lifecycle Intelligence:
- August registrations rose 5.23%, almost entirely on a .xyz bulk-registration wave; without .xyz, the market was flat.
- The active pool grew faster than in July, repeating the August-over-July pattern seen in 2025.
- Among developer-focused extensions, .dev showed the clearest deployment-platform signal; .app was mixed and .bot leaned toward registrar-default DNS.
- Expiry and deletion data both show young domains dominating the exit path.
- Reported sales and volume rose, but no seven-figure sale appeared; premium-domain nameserver changes fell as expiry activity increased.
1. New Registrations
A total of 8,927,200 newly registered domains were observed across monitored gTLDs in August 2026, up +443,616 from July’s 8,483,584, a rise of 5.23%. Both months have 31 days, so the daily average moved with the total, from 273,664 to 287,974. Nearly the whole rise was .xyz, up 435,091 or 98% of the month’s net gain; the rest of the market added about 8,500 names, flat against July.

Tracked Extensions
| TLD | July | August | Change | MoM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| .com | 4,137,047 | 4,167,130 | +30,083 | +0.73% |
| .net | 266,669 | 257,078 | -9,591 | -3.60% |
| .org | 264,128 | 259,891 | -4,237 | -1.60% |
| .xyz | 757,817 | 1,192,908 | +435,091 | +57.41% |
| .app | 124,705 | 118,696 | -6,009 | -4.82% |
| .dev | 34,456 | 35,279 | +823 | +2.39% |
| .bot | 602 | 1,042 | +440 | +73.09% |
| .online | 254,240 | 251,156 | -3,084 | -1.21% |
| .lol | 34,024 | 47,714 | +13,690 | +40.24% |
.com edged up 0.73%, while .net, .org and .online declined. The general-purpose extensions were flat to slightly down; nearly the whole of the market’s net growth came from .xyz.
.xyz defined the month. Its 1,192,908 registrations are the highest monthly total we have recorded for the extension. The first week averaged 40,657 per day; the last averaged 5,981. One registrar handled 86.2% of the volume, 83.8% of the names went to marketplace nameservers on day one, and 89.6% were pure-letter strings. Together, those signals point to a large resale portfolio rather than broad end-user demand.
.lol rose 40.24% to 47,714. Registrations spiked to 3,802 on August 6, then settled at a higher level late in the month: August 21–31 averaged 2,034 per day, against 1,267 across the first twenty days.
.bot grew 73.09% to 1,042, the largest percentage move on the smallest base. The gain concentrated on August 20, when 134 names were registered against a typical 25. They were spread across ten registrars and fourteen nameserver providers with no shared naming template, which looks more like independent demand than one bulk buyer. Only 24 of the month’s names contained an AI or agent term.
Build-First Extensions: Where the Names Point
.app, .dev and .bot are marketed to builders, so the table compares where their August registrations pointed on day one, using .com as a baseline. Nameservers are a comparative signal, not proof of use: a platform-delegated name may be idle, and a name on registrar-default DNS may still be intended for a project.

| TLD | August regs | Hosting platforms | Cloudflare | Vercel | AWS | Registrar default |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| .dev | 35,279 | 58.0% | 47.8% | 5.9% | 3.0% | 33.7% |
| .app | 118,696 | 38.5% | 31.6% | 4.5% | 1.3% | 49.4% |
| .bot | 1,042 | 15.8% | 9.3% | 3.4% | 2.9% | 70.2% |
| .com | 4,167,130 | 28.3% | 24.1% | 0.9% | 0.8% | 41.8% |
Cloudflare separates the groups least: it fronts 24.1% of new .com names and 47.8% of .dev. The sharper differences are at Vercel and AWS. Vercel appears on 5.9% of .dev and 4.5% of .app registrations, against 0.9% of .com; AWS shows a similar, smaller gap.
.dev is the only one of the three whose delegation mix clearly matches its positioning. Its hosting-platform share rose from 54.3% in July to 58.0%, the highest of any extension we track.
.bot sits at the other end: 70.2% used registrar-default nameservers and 15.8% pointed at hosting platforms, about half the .com baseline. .app falls between them, with its hosting share slipping from 41.1% in July to 38.5%. The unchanged .com baseline indicates that these shifts were specific to the three extensions.
2. Active Domain Pool
The active gTLD pool grew from 251,885,070 on August 1 to 254,367,154 on August 31, a net gain of +2,482,084 domains, or +0.99%. That is a faster month than July, which added 1,920,616 (+0.77%), and close to June’s 2,713,034 (+1.10%). The base is now 26,168,984 domains larger than it was at the end of August 2025, a rise of 11.47% over twelve months.

Pool growth was steady through August, with the usual weekend flattening and no single-day break.
Tracked Extensions
| TLD | Aug 1 | Aug 31 | Change | % | July change |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| .com | 165,034,002 | 165,881,293 | +847,291 | +0.51% | +954,916 (+0.58%) |
| .net | 12,324,888 | 12,373,404 | +48,516 | +0.39% | +59,254 (+0.48%) |
| .org | 12,040,008 | 12,109,594 | +69,586 | +0.58% | +63,973 (+0.53%) |
| .xyz | 8,901,719 | 9,657,010 | +755,291 | +8.48% | +378,523 (+4.43%) |
| .app | 1,519,082 | 1,600,648 | +81,566 | +5.37% | +94,289 (+6.62%) |
| .dev | 721,859 | 747,138 | +25,279 | +3.50% | +24,031 (+3.45%) |
| .bot | 22,272 | 22,822 | +550 | +2.47% | +167 (+0.76%) |
| .online | 3,445,452 | 3,498,087 | +52,635 | +1.53% | +45,965 (+1.35%) |
The three legacy extensions added 965,393 domains, down from 1,078,143 in July. .com supplied about a third of total pool growth, while .net recorded the slowest rate in the table at 0.39%.
.xyz added 755,291 domains, twice its July gain and 30% of the market’s net growth despite representing less than 4% of the active pool. Its base passed 9.6 million.
.app crossed 1.6 million but slowed from 6.62% growth to 5.37%. .dev held near 3.5%, while .bot more than tripled its July gain on a much smaller base. .online posted its fastest growth of the summer at 1.53%.
A few smaller extensions contracted, led by .pro, down 21,195 domains (-1.82%). .red and .food each fell about 3%, with little effect on the overall pool.
August Against August
August outgrew July in both years available. The pool rose 0.89% in August 2025 after 0.54% in July, and 0.99% in August 2026 after 0.77% in July. Two years are not enough to establish seasonality, but neither shows a summer slowdown in active-pool growth.
3. Expired Domains
This new section tracks domains first observed entering expiry during August. Month-over-month comparison will begin with the next report.
A total of 8,162,115 gTLD domains were first observed entering expiry in August 2026, an average of 263,294 per day, spread across 566 extensions and 2,904 registrars. A domain counts from the day its registrar moved it off its live nameservers onto expiry holding, or from the day its status first showed redemption or pending delete, whichever came first. Names that had already been deleted or renewed by the time of our early-September check are not included, so the figure is a floor, and it understates the first days of the month more than the last.

By Extension
| TLD | Entered expiry | Share | Grace period | Redemption | Pending delete |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| .com | 3,909,958 | 47.90% | 1,170,173 | 2,286,044 | 453,741 |
| .xyz | 901,546 | 11.05% | 501,407 | 320,462 | 79,677 |
| .top | 744,010 | 9.12% | 387,585 | 286,674 | 69,751 |
| .net | 226,896 | 2.78% | 59,281 | 136,108 | 31,507 |
| .online | 206,649 | 2.53% | 79,247 | 108,856 | 18,546 |
| .org | 202,878 | 2.49% | 58,471 | 132,495 | 11,912 |
| .info | 188,712 | 2.31% | 54,285 | 133,828 | 599 |
| .store | 150,621 | 1.85% | 47,566 | 87,516 | 15,539 |
| .vip | 141,537 | 1.73% | 49,341 | 69,189 | 23,007 |
| .site | 140,493 | 1.72% | 52,990 | 75,864 | 11,639 |
.com supplied 47.90% of the month’s expiries, a little under its share of the active pool. .xyz and .top together supplied another 20.17%, well above their combined pool share, which is the other side of the promotional registration waves those two extensions have carried through the year. The three together account for 68.07% of the total.
The stage mix differs by extension. Of the .com names, 58.47% were already in redemption when first observed, whereas the majority of the .xyz and .top names were still in the grace period, 55.62% and 52.09% respectively. The newer extensions are being caught earlier in the exit, at the point where the registrar parks the name; the .com names more often surface once they have already moved a stage further.
Where They Stand

| Stage | Domains | Share | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grace period | 2,977,425 | 36.48% | Past the expiry date, may still be renewable by the registrant |
| Redemption | 4,362,483 | 53.45% | Registrar has requested deletion and the name is typically out of the zone; the former registrant can usually restore it through the registrar for an additional fee |
| Pending delete | 822,207 | 10.07% | Final days before the name is dropped and becomes available |
The 2,977,425 names in grace may still be renewable, subject to each registrar’s terms and fees. Of these, 81.9% had moved to expiry-holding nameservers, a state often associated with auctions but not proof of a listing. .com made up 39.3% of the group, .xyz 16.8% and .top 13.0%.
Across the whole population, 57.1% of names were on expiry-holding nameservers when checked, 18.0% on registrar-default nameservers, 14.3% had no delegation at all and had already dropped out of the zone, and 10.6% pointed elsewhere.
Age at Expiry

87.4% of the domains entering expiry were one to five years old, and 80.7% were one to three years old. At the other end, 72,294 had been held for at least twenty years and 494 for thirty years or more.
Pure-letter names made up 64.9% of expiries. The largest registrar accounted for 16.2% of the total and the five largest for 50.4%.
The Oldest Names to Enter Expiry
Among the 494 names aged thirty years or more, these are the oldest, re-checked against registry records in early September and confirmed still in the exit path:
| Domain | Registered | Age | Stage, early September |
|---|---|---|---|
| dtitech.com | 1991-08-27 | 35 years | Grace period |
| void.org | 1994-07-13 | 32 years | Redemption |
| oid.com | 1994-08-01 | 32 years | Grace period |
| ramsys.com | 1994-08-05 | 32 years | Grace period |
| wetlabs.com | 1994-08-10 | 32 years | Grace period |
void.org appeared in July’s report in grace and has since moved into redemption. dtitech.com is the oldest name on this month’s list.
4. Deleted Domains
We recorded 4,338,202 such domains, an average of 139,942 per day. The figure is a floor: names registered again before the early-September check are no longer visible as deleted, and a quality screen excludes some records.
We also excluded 1,329,214 records whose expiry dates were more than six months earlier. Since 91% appeared on two days at the start of August, they represent delayed visibility rather than August deletions; including them would have distorted the monthly total.

By Extension
| TLD | Deleted | Share |
|---|---|---|
| .com | 2,114,779 | 48.75% |
| .top | 382,924 | 8.83% |
| .xyz | 189,306 | 4.36% |
| .org | 185,190 | 4.27% |
| .net | 153,482 | 3.54% |
| All other extensions | 1,312,521 | 30.25% |
| Total | 4,338,202 | 100.00% |
.com supplied 48.75% of deletions, close to its 47.90% share of expiry entrants. The two groups are separated by the lifecycle delay: most August deletions expired in May or June. That helps explain why .xyz accounted for 11.05% of new expiry cases but only 4.36% of deletions.
How Long the Exit Takes
Most of August’s deletions dropped 60 to 110 days after expiry: 50.3% at 60 to 80 days, 34.9% at 80 to 110, and a faster 4.7% at 30 to 60. A separate 7.8% were removed before their recorded expiry date, which may reflect voluntary deletion, enforcement, payment issues or timing differences in the source records. What the month’s deletions had in common was not their timing but their age.

Age at Deletion
84.4% of deleted domains were one to five years old, including 77.3% aged one to three. Seven in ten had been registered in 2025. Only 4.2% were at least ten years old.
The expiry and deletion profiles have the same shape: young names dominate both. This is consistent with promotional cohorts turning over, although the two groups were not linked at the domain level.
5. Market and Industry News
Market
We recorded 932 publicly reported domain sales in August, up 99 from July’s 833 on the same basis, a rise of 11.9%. Disclosed volume across those 932 sales came to roughly $12.6 million against $8.8 million in July, up 44.2%. Twenty-nine transactions cleared $100,000, and the median disclosed price was $3,550.
| Domain | Price | Recorded | Venue as recorded |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stan.com | $750,000 | Aug 20 | Lumis |
| ZANO.com | $500,000 | Aug 21 | Atom.com |
| Folk.com | $250,000 | Aug 2 | Private sale |
| of.ai | $250,000 | Aug 7 | DomainNames.com |
| orchestra.ai | $250,000 | Aug 28 | Afternic |
.ai supplied 12 of the 30 largest recorded sales but only 96 of 922 priced sales overall. .com still accounted for 17 of the top 30 and 628 of the total. The ten largest sales contributed $3.0 million, or 24% of disclosed volume.
Industry News
- ICANN’s 2026 application round closed on August 12 with more than 1,600 primary applications, of which more than 1,100 also carried a replacement string, at an evaluation fee of $227,000 per application. This is the first general opening of the top-level namespace since the 2012 round, and the applied-for strings will remain private until reveal day.
- Verisign raised the .net wholesale price on August 27, from $10.91 to $12.00 per year effective March 1, 2027. The 9.99% rise sits just under the 10% annual ceiling in the registry agreement, and it is the first .net increase to take effect since February 2024.
- ICANN terminated a registrar’s accreditation over abuse handling. Estonia-based Fewmoretaps OU, trading as Trustname.com, received a further breach notice on August 26 and a termination notice on August 27, the fourth breach notice in 78 days, with the termination effective September 11. ICANN cited failure to act on reports of domains used for phishing and other abuse. The company had marketed itself as a privacy-focused registrar for sensitive niches.
Premium Domain Changes
Our Changes Monitor recorded 74,178 events across the tracked premium .com set, down 9.4% from July. The set includes keyword domains and 12,083 names with two- to four-character second-level strings.
| Event type | August | July | Change | MoM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Renewals | 28,915 | 30,686 | -1,771 | -5.8% |
| Status changes | 16,593 | 15,112 | +1,481 | +9.8% |
| Nameserver changes | 9,383 | 16,137 | -6,754 | -41.9% |
| Expiries | 8,136 | 7,934 | +202 | +2.5% |
| Expiry date changes | 4,646 | 5,465 | -819 | -15.0% |
| Transfers | 3,913 | 3,956 | -43 | -1.1% |
| Backorder catches | 2,592 | 2,573 | +19 | +0.7% |
Nameserver changes fell 41.9%, meaning less relisting, delisting and redelegation. Status changes rose 9.8%, led by the exit path: pending-delete transitions reached 12,053 and redemption transitions rose 50.3% to 2,316. Renewals fell 5.8%, so more of the tracked set moved toward expiry.
On marketplace delegation, 809 premium names moved onto Afternic’s nameservers during the month against 870 in July, and 1,331 moved off against 2,296. Names leaving still outnumber names arriving, but the gap narrowed from 1,426 to 522, and it narrowed because the outflow fell by 42% rather than because listings rose.
Notable Moves
| Domain | Registered | Change |
|---|---|---|
| lex.com | 1994 | Registrar DNS to Afternic nameservers |
| low.com | 1995 | Registrar DNS to Afternic nameservers |
| asat.com | 1994 | Afternic to Atom, moved between marketplaces |
| cole.com | 1993 | Registrar transfer, NameCheap to Cloudflare |
| kd.com | 1995 | Registrar transfer, Alibaba Cloud to eName |
The moves by lex.com and low.com are the clearest listing signals; asat.com switched marketplaces rather than leaving one.
Thirty-eight three-letter .com names entered expiry during August, among them gsm.com and ccg.com, both registered in 1993, and oid.com, which also appears in Section 3 as one of the oldest names to enter the exit path this month.
